Feds shouldn’t forget drug abuse epidemic, GAO states

The Government Responsibility Workplace directed the federal government to enhance national efforts to curb and recover from drug abuse, adding the recommendation to its biennial list of high-risk locations susceptible to scams, waste, abuse and mismanagement.

The biggest taped boost of drug overdose deaths took place from Might 2019 to Might 2020, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noting a considerable increase in overdose deaths from March to May that was most likely fueled by the staggering economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the report. The GAO provided numerous recommendations to better resolve the drug abuse epidemic.1.

Increase capability

Capacity and gain access to remain significant problems, with nearly one-third of U.S. counties lacking compound usage disorder treatment facilities since Might 2020, the Drug Abuse and Mental Health Solutions Administration found. There should be a five-year projection for the National Drug Control Program that approximates and prioritizes federal funding or other resources needed to achieve long-range quantifiable objectives, the GAO stated. There should also be clearer direction on the function of states and usage of grant funding to deal with the training needs for those dealing with drug misuse.2.

Improve leadership

The Workplace of National Drug Control Policy should deal with HHS, the Justice Department, Department of Education and Department of Homeland Security to collaborate drug misuse avoidance and recovery efforts. That includes promoting partnerships with state, regional, and tribal firms in addition to with community groups that are likewise dealing with the drug crisis.3.

Complete the action plan

The ONDCP must fill in holes related to its long-term goals, the GAO said. The office did not determine or document how its $100 million drug-free neighborhoods support program adds to achieving specific objectives and some programs at SAMHSA did not include adequate metrics to link the programs’ activities to the avoidance goal. The school environment transformation grant program also did not have metrics connected to its effect.

4. Coast up information reporting

The ONDCP and other federal, state and city government authorities have slammed the timeliness, precision and ease of access of data from law enforcement and public health sources connected to fatal and non-fatal overdose cases. The workplace should lead an evaluation of how to improve data reporting.

5. Continued watchfulness

Although the rate of drug overdose deaths in 2018 decreased compared to 2017, that was reversed in 2019 as the overdose death rate increased from 20.7 to 21.6 deaths per 100,000 population– nearly reaching 2017’s peak. While many agencies responsible for attending to drug abuse are currently taken part in COVID-19 reaction and relief efforts, the drug epidemic will continue to require their attention.
